Why do we measure dissolved oxygen?

Dissolved oxygen (DO) can indicate the health or quality of the water. Higher concentrations of dissolved oxygen indicate higher levels of productivity and less pollution. Oxygen is essential for ecosystems in the water and some chemical reactions, but too much oxygen can also be detrimental to ecosystems.
